Install Ceph for distributed, replicated, dynamically-provisioned block storage volumes
Many applications, when attempting to achieve replicated storage, will not be compatible with NAS or networked filesystems such as NFS. Databases are common examples that do not play nicely with NFS, like MongoDB, MySQL, sqlite, or postgresql.
However, these sorts of applications often are very compatible with block storage devices, including networked ones such as iSCSI. However, iSCSI is not easily dynamically provisioned.
Ceph is a distributed storage system, provisioned using block devices, using binary blob-based storage internally, which supports dynamic provisioning of arbitrary block devices. Ceph is designed to make use of storage distributed on commodity hardware, increasing the reliability of the storage with replication while also scaling hugely. Ceph also is starting to support Kubernetes-based deployment with helm, which is ideal for the infrastructure.
